Mouth to Lung, Direct Lung and which is right for you

Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct Lung (DL) is some lingo that is used within the vaping community. These terms refer to the type of draw or inhale you would be provided by their respective devices. It is important to know the difference between these terms and make sure that you are purchasing a device or tank that is right for you.

What is Mouth to Lung (MTL)?

Mouth to lung is a specific type of draw where you would inhale the vapor into your mouth, then inhaling it into your lungs. This type of draw is very much like the draw you would experience when smoking a cigarette. Mouth to lung is a much tighter draw and does not require much airflow through the device.

Mouth to lung devices are used a lot by people who want to experience the ‘cig-a-like’ effect rather than experienced vapers with their large and dense clouds of vapor.

What is Direct Lung (DL)?

Direct lung is another type of draw, it is the act of inhaling the vapor directly into your lungs rather than holding it in your mouth like you do with an MTL inhale. It is very much like taking in a breath of fresh air. This type of draw requires a much more airflow than MTL to cool the device as its a much more powerful draw.

Direct lung tanks are used more by experienced vapers and are not similar to that of ‘cig-a-like’ machines. Unlike a cigarette, or MTL devices, direct lung devices tend to create large dense clouds, which I’m sure you will have seen at least once while walking around your local area.

Which is right for you?

It is important to choose the right device that will provide the right draw for you. If you are using vaping as a way to quit or cut down on smoking then MTL is probably going to be the best option for you. This is because it is very much like the draw of a cigarette and it will feel familiar to you, making it easier to make the switch.

If you have been using a MTL device/tank for a while and want to start getting more involved with vaping powerful devices, then you will be looking for one that provides a DL draw. This type of draw is not similar to a cigarette but does usually intensify the flavour of your e-liquids. For this reason a lot of people do take up vaping for the flavours, and the devices they would choose would tend to be a one the provides a DL draw.

What E Liquids are best for Mouth to Lung?

There are thousands of e liquids out there for you to choose, however depending on the type of device you are purchasing there are some juices that would be more effective.

TPD liquids are most likely the best e liquids for MTL, they usually come in 10ml bottles but their nicotine levels range from 0mg to 20mg. With these liquids it is important to choose the correct nicotine level, if you are using vaping as a way of quitting or cutting down they you are going to need a higher nicotine level. We would recommend starting with 12-20mg depending on how many cigarettes you are used to smoking on a daily basis. It is worth mentioning that 50/50 liquids are better for older or smaller coils due to the liquid being thinner

Nicotine salts are also available and provide a much smoother vaping experience, although these can be a lot more expensive.

What E Liquids are best for Direct Lung?

When it comes to direct lung, the nicotine strength will be very different. Most vapers will not exceed 6mg of nicotine in their shortfills. This is because the direct lung draw is a lot larger, taking in more vape and therefore more nicotine per draw, and can result in coughing or irritation of the throat if it is any higher. 70/30 VG/PG liquids are more suitable for the use of a direct lung device. Shortfill bottles usually start at 50ml and can go much higher. Under UK legislation is it now illegal to sell shortfills with nicotine in them if the size of the bottle exceeds 10ml, therefore, nicotine shots are available to buy separately and you would add these to your shortfills yourself. Although 70/30 liquid is better for DL in general, newer or larger coils can handle almost all liquids.

Best Devices / Tanks for Mouth to Lung

It is important to mention that some devices are strictly MTL or DL. Whereas other devices are capable of doing either type of draw depending on the type of tank you purchase and the airflow it provides. An example of this could be the Drag X, it comes with a DL pod tank. However, as you can adjust the airflow and purchase a MTL pod for the device, you can use it as MTL if you wish.
